handmade leather bags

    about us...

papagos specialises in handmade leather bags

the company was started in 2001by Fiona Craig, born out of long career in the equine industry

Fiona's interest in leather started whilst working for a harness maker, leading her to train at The Saddlery Training Centre, Salisbury and qualify as a bridle maker

having a good eye for quality leather and good workmanship, she was so frustrated by the inferior use of materials evident in so many bags on the market when trying to purchase a bag for herself, that she decided to try her hand at making one

the first bag was so beautiful that people kept asking where it had come from, and the idea for papagos was born

the company is named after Fiona's favourite horse, papagos, an American thoroughbred - the name is believed to have originated from a tribe in Arizona

about the product...

the leather used is the best quality full grain hide - this leather improves with age and wear, becoming richer and more comfortable with time

the bags are completely hand made - they are hand cut and hand stitched and sewing machines are not used for any part of the making process

the stitching is as strong and hard-wearing as the leather, which can only be achieved by hand stitching with waxed linen thread

hand making in this way creates slight variations in colour and size, making each piece  unique

all the bags have bright colourful linings, maintaining the uniqueness of the item
